This week’s blog begins a focus on the public policy affecting Northern Virginia’s waterfront–Alexandria’s to be specific, but it’s a tale with a long history, beginning with an inactive coal-fired power plant.
Last week I had a chance to get caught up with current activities at the Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center and was surprised to learn of a proposed reuse of the power plant, a long standing eyesore, not to mention environmental headache.
The idea was simple enough: find a program that fit the facility. Architects are forever dreaming up these things. And it would seem the WAAC faculty and students have found an interesting one. As part of the expanded Virginia Tech presence associated with the Amazon redevelopment, bring in Tech’s own Center for Power Electronic Systems.
