Maddie was our First Female
Save for her brown eyes, she could have been Layla’s older sister. Nicknamed “Booboo” for the trouble she liked to get into.
Perfectly camouflaged and still as a statue

Thank You, Evergreen
Your ornaments now falling
electric lights still glowing
hearing now escaping still
tomorrow I will set to trim
your branches, take the babbles, pack
away the glitter and forget
the silent, essent smell
of walking through
a path below the boughs.

I’m heading off to the wilds of the left coast–specifically to Portland, Oregon for a writer’s conference, after which I’m meeting up with my son so we can tour the city for the first time, stare at the Columbia River and spend a bit of time at Powell’s Books, rumored to be a five hour experience. I hope they’ll fly the books back via drone. I’m taking Sallie Rooney’s new book, Normal People with me on the plane. Nowhere near the length of The Prince of Tides, it may not last the entire trip across the country. Sean’s taking the train down from Seattle; I suspect his travels will be way more enjoyable, not being sardine-can packed in a middle seat.
And next week’s blog may be a day late since I’ll be returning next Wednesday. Apologies ahead of time if it is.
What They Hear?
What they hear?
what they be sounding
honking like they’s flying
in for good love’n
on the water slapping
happy as they is
and thinking life is fine
as swimming in a lake
all them honkers.
The rest of the tree lies just below the heron taking in the scene.
