In an attempt at a semi-serious piece of literary commentary, I’m writing about Joan Didion’s Slouching Toward Bethlehem in something titled Didion’s Slouch, to borrow her appropriation – a bit like taking a selfie with a famous person. I can visualize a Ralph Steadman cartoon cover for her book.

The article by Caitlin Flanagan in The Atlantic, The Autumn of Joan Didion, is a different take on the author. She makes a point of defining Didion’s principal fan base as women. But the observation describing Didion’s uptight personal manner resulting from mental fragility?

Aren’t all writers fragile?
