Layla’s down time - photo by the author, Dec ‘23
Now in the sixth year of this - who’d have thought?
The bulk of this newsletter was written over a month ago. About the winter time we were having in Sanderling on vacation. About following Layla on the trails between Sanderling cul-de-sacs then back up the beach. Photos from that time are attached. Hard life.
But the piece I’d submitted to a publication was stuck. I’ve been published with regularity in the past. Maybe I shouldn’t have assumed—yeah, yeah, yeah.
I’d had a rocking 2023 getting attention on Medium. It feels good to be loved. So night after night at the beach, I rewrote the piece and submitted it for publication, hoping to publish early January.
The Medium editor suggested changes and dropped from sight, like in a Humphrey Bogart movie. Honest, that’s what happened. But this editor I’d been following from when I joined Medium. She wrote about the practical sides of writing with humor and insights worth spending time with.
Since then, I’ve been published under both of her publications. She’s been a reason my stories were boosted – a Medium program that expands a story’s visibility– and the suggestions she made about the latest I’ve written, Music as a Muse, which is linked here. I self-published it.
I still hope she’ll review it. She did sharpen the story.
