Last year D told me she was going to Spain with or without me; she meant it. Time slips by for me. She pays closer attention, we’re very different that way.
Preparation involved checking my camera batteries and buying new flashcards. The laptop would be my backup, since I expected to be filling the flashcards.
My Nikon D70 takes two flashcards, which I set in duplicate mode, protection in case one card fails. It doesn’t guarantee great photos—that’s mostly up to the operator—but we were going to tour an impressive number of great buildings. I toyed with buying a telephoto lens, but schlepping it through multiple cities, planes trains and taxis put me off.
Hordes in the Garden was written in a rush returning from Spain. Going on a year later, it’s time to get back to the rest of the photos. With 53 gigs of photos, it took weeks just to sort and edit the Alhambra photos, and I easily could have included more. Being able to weave the story of the last Sultan to the magical place where he’d lived, that was a kick.
This go round it’s Gaudi’s Sagrada Família. Again, it was weeks working on the photos, and some just had to be left out.
