Cormorants on a branch—photo by the author, ©2024

In the Photo: It was a few days before the lake froze, but these three cormorants thought it wiser to perch on the branch than join the Canadian geese in the water beyond. Either way it was damn cold!

First month of 2025. Seventh year doing this newsletter. Never thought I’d be doing this so long.

The snow lasted longer than normal, as did the below-zero temperature. The local fox community used the frozen lake as their personal highway. So a short photo series on what their husky cousin loves best is below left.

We actually sat with neighbors to watch the Commanders’ last game of the season. Surrounded by their three dogs. Washington has a football team again. Even if that last game was hard to watch, we ate well.

I was reminded of the Redskins’ playoff game against the Detroit Lyons back in the ’91 season. D and I were dating back then, and I had two tickets to the game. “Wanna go?” We watched from end zone seats in the cold rain, drinking hot chocolate laced with bourbon and yelling our heads off. They won the Superbowl that year. We might have gone to this year’s Philly game except for the $800 seats. Maybe next year.

I’m cheering for Washington to get its team back. They don’t belong anywhere but in the city, where their long suffering fans want them. Can’t blame Dan Snider for moving the team to MD—his cranky predecessor, Jack the Kemp Cook did that, and then he passed on. Altogether bad timing, that.

If you know Dorothy Parker, than you’re even older as I am. We pretend writers still practice her skills.

In the middle of working on the Dorothy Parker piece, I was distracted by a story Alison Acheson wrote about verse novels. So this last Medium piece is dedicated to her.
