An interesting podcast landed today, and I wanted to pass it on. I’ve mentioned The Book Incubator a few times. Mary Adkins promotes this writing program gently on the podcast, The First Draft Club. No further commercials.

Mary’s guest this week is Alle Mudrick, who leads a session on memoir writing in The Book Incubator. Having sat in on several of Alle’s sessions, I find her very worth listening to.

Amy Griffin’s memoir, The Tell, is their subject. Griffin’s subjext is sexual abuse, and that’s where it gets complicated. What you need to know is Alle and Mary are very much of one mind, that memoir should be truthful, and that probably Amy Griffin shouldn’t have employed a ghost writer - whether intentionally or not, seems Griffin was ‘ghosted’ by him.

The worst heat broke, then the rains came down, and I was readying the pontoon boat to herd Layla on board as our only animal until realizing the batteries would get us to the middle of the lake, but launching ourselves over the dam wasn’t advisable.

Layla the husky isn’t one for the heat. But rain, as long as thunder doesn’t accompany it, she’ll take one for the team. She knows where the dog towels are kept as well as we do.

I had a number of stories written except for the polishing, but FIOS kept crapping out - like every ten minutes or so, so we bought a mesh network (rumored to be the best Wifi system) but it just confused our devices, not knowing which one to synch up with, so that one went back and we’re back to the same old Verizon intermittend FIOS. The Bose unit blinks in and out, as does my laptop’s connections. I’m now using Google docs for text—ever since MS Word was corrupted and Microsoft support went rogue. Something to do with my refusing to use CoPilot.

I ordered a set of chisels and some limestone. That way nobody can accuse me of AI-ing my way to fame. Layla and I are very glad fall’s finally here.

D and I watched a Netflix series last week that was good enough to promote. Came across it by searching for something, anything, to watch on TV. I’m tired of PBS reruns, and I’ll never watch Father Brown on penalty of death..

Tom Burke is the lead. If you missed his acting in Strike, you might want to go back and watch that one as well.

Neil Forsyth is the screenwriter. If you’re into studying how a master screenwriter works, watch Legends.

“The six-part series is created and written by Neil Forsyth, and was commissioned by Netflix in August 2024. Forsyth and Ben Farrell are executive producers… and Richard Bradley is an executive producer… Directors on the series are Brady Hood and Julian Holmes, the series producer is Charlie Leech, and the story producer is Rhiannon Forsyth.

“The series is inspired by the 2022 true crime book The Betrayer: How An Undercover Unit Infiltrated the Global Drug Trade, by Guy Stanton and Peter Walsh, as well as extensive research and interviews that Neil Forsyth conducted with Stanton and other former undercover Customs agents.

“Stanton worked for HM Customs for 23 years, ten of which were spent in an undercover unit set up in 1991 to thwart a large drug smuggling operation. He writes in the prologue of the book that it is all based on actual events, with names and some details changed to protect the identities of the operatives.

“On August 24, 2026, the series was renewed for a second season.” From Wikipedia page on Legends
