Evans’ Rag

Vol 1 Issue 16

After writing last week about women sports, I went back to some old photos of the NOVA Running Club in the early 90s when it was first establishing a reputation for encouraging women runners. I’ll admit part of my motivation in those days was being, er, attracted to truly fit women. But I also came to understand what it meant to watch them train and race as hard—-probably harder— than men in the club. I remember cold rainy nights when there were but a handful doing hill repeats, but Barbara was always one of us.

I can’t understand how being competitive could only be a man’s prerogative, or why competitive women are threatening to some men.

The club is still around, now known as Northern Virginia Running Club. (aka NOVA)

This week’s blog is about Frank. Someone I admired for his stoicism and his humor. I have no photos of Frank, only very strong memories.
